Maths

KS3 before GCSE (Years 7 to 9) is a crucial time for children to discover their interest and aptitude in mathematics and to explore a wide range of experiences freely. During this stage, children should develop mathematical literacy, which goes beyond simply understanding formulas or performing calculations. Mathematical literacy involves the ability to comprehend and analyze problem situations, reason logically, and apply mathematical concepts to real-life scenarios. Developing this skill not only improves short-term academic performance but also fosters long-term critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Relying solely on learning calculations and memorizing formulas limits a child’s capacity for deep mathematical thinking. By strengthening mathematical literacy, children can approach new and unfamiliar problems strategically, develop creative and logical thinking skills, and build a foundation that can be applied across various subjects and real-world contexts. In the long run, nurturing these skills has a far greater impact than simply learning one more formula.

Parents are encouraged to focus not just on grades or memorization but on supporting their children in enjoying mathematics, exploring independently, and expanding their thinking through diverse problems. Experiences and skills developed during this critical period provide a strong foundation for confidence and success in high school, higher education, and beyond.

.

Key areas we cover include:

  • Mathematical Literacy Development – Understanding and interpreting problems, reasoning logically, and applying concepts to real-world situations.

  • Problem-Solving Skills – Encouraging strategic thinking, exploring multiple approaches, and building resilience in tackling challenging problems.

  • Critical Thinking & Logic – Developing reasoning skills, identifying patterns, and constructing well-founded arguments.

  • Numeracy & Calculation Skills – Strengthening fundamental operations and numerical fluency for confidence in more complex concepts.

  • Creative Application of Mathematics – Encouraging innovation through projects, puzzles, and real-life applications.

  • Preparation for KS3 and Beyond – Building a strong foundation for GCSE studies, high school challenges, and lifelong learning.

We offer a range of group sessions, including:

  • Small Group Tutorials – Focused, interactive sessions to build confidence and address individual learning needs.

  • Further Maths Group – Advanced sessions for students who wish to explore topics beyond the standard curriculum, deepen their understanding, and challenge their problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Exam Preparation Groups – Targeted sessions to reinforce understanding and practice strategies for KS3 assessments and beyond.

Our sessions are designed to inspire a love of English while building key academic skills for long-term success.

Maths Goes Beyond numbers, memorizing formulas or performing calculations. In our Year 7 lessons, we focus on disciplinary literacy, helping students read, interpret, and communicate mathematical ideas effectively. This approach develops critical thinking, problem-solving, and logical reasoning skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Through connected lessons that integrate real-world applications and collaborative problem-solving, students strengthen their ability to understand complex problems, analyze patterns, and articulate mathematical reasoning clearly. These skills not only support success in KS3 and future assessments but also foster confidence and adaptability in any learning environment.

By engaging with maths through a disciplinary literacy lens, students are equipped to approach challenges strategically, think analytically, and explore concepts with curiosity and confidence.

Your Questions Answered

  • Safeguarding is essential in tutoring, whether it's conducted in person or online.

    Background Checks and References

Qualified tutors must undergo appropriate background checks, including a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This process helps identify any criminal history that could present a risk.

    Additional Safeguards

Even with a DBS check, parents should take extra precautions. We recommend the following:

    • Avoid holding lessons in a bedroom. It’s best to have lessons in a central area, like the kitchen table.

    • For online tutoring, use parental controls on the devices your child uses to monitor and limit access to inappropriate content.

    • Discuss privacy measures with your tutor, such as recording the lesson for future use, using a virtual whiteboard, and limiting screen sharing to the necessary materials.

    • Sit in on the first lesson or two, especially if your child is younger. Gradually allow more independence as you get to know the tutor and build trust.

    • Keep the door open so you’re within earshot.

    • Regularly ask your child about their experience with the tutor. Make sure they feel comfortable sharing any concerns. Teach your child about online safety and appropriate behavior, and encourage them to talk to you if they feel uncomfortable.

    • Stay in communication with the tutor. Address any concerns right away and keep an open line for ongoing dialogue.

    • Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, discuss it with us immediately.

  • If you’re seeking someone skilled and trained to teach, opt for a qualified tutor. While this may seem obvious, a tutor with the right teaching qualifications will have hands-on experience working with children in your child’s age group and specific subject. A qualified tutor is a subject matter expert who can monitor progress, communicate with your child’s school (if needed), and stay informed about the latest curriculum updates and exam standards.

We offer high-quality tuition at home with fully qualified teachers. All our tutors are experienced professionals, carefully vetted by us, and hold enhanced DBS checks.

  • Square-Studio Cambridge Tutors offers both 1-on-1 tuition and group lessons. Group sessions are limited to a maximum of 6 pupils. This social setting allows children to learn alongside their peers, which can help build confidence in the classroom.

One-on-one tuition is available either online or offline, depending on your location. This type of tuition provides focused support, making it ideal for children who may get distracted in groups or need extra help to build self-esteem and confidence in learning. If you’re looking for a private English or math tutor, this is a great place to start.
